  • Stuart Shils - The Structure of the Visual Moment

    This 3-day outdoor workshop held in the town space of Snow Hill, will focus on essential pictorial issues related to the interior thought structure of painting and will also provide a heavy dose of engagement with drawing as the thought engine behind all visual consideration. Drawing will be explored by way of pencil, collage, working with polka dots and with string to challenge preconceived notions of what is right and wrong. 




    Our primary questions and concerns are ones of "form" and not to reinforce any ideas about what sells in galleries or even what a "landscape painting is supposed to be, as much as what a painting can be or needs to be in terms of it's structure and design. Color is a major element of all visual conversation and will be on the front burner here. 




    Questions we ask ourselves in front of the landscape put focus on what attracts us and what holds us, "What are the attractors and what are the holders?" The answers to those questions are then built into how we go about making a painting in the first place and how we responsively organize the layering of our visual thinking.




    These three days are focused on asking questions and recognizing that our answers come from inside the questions and that the critical dialogue between question and response is really the midwife of the painting. .








    I must impress upon myself that I know nothing at all, for that is the only way to make progress.

    Stuart Shils has painted outside or looking through windows for 30 years. Now he works in the studio, but with an eye tuned to the city’s many faces, often through the camera oriPhone lens. Over time his work has been presented in solo shows in NYC, Philadelphia, Tel Aviv, Boston, Scottsdale, Stuttgart, LA, Richmond, San Francisco and Cork (Ireland

    Critical review and commentary has appeared in newspapers, journals and magazines, including: The Brooklyn Rail, The New York Times, The New Yorker, The New York Sun, Ha'aretz, The Jerusalem Post,, The Wall Street Journal, The Boston Globe, The Boston Phoenix, The Philadelphia Inquirer, TheIrish Times, Art in America, The New Republic, The New Criterion, Art New England, American Artist and The Hudson Review

    He was an annual visiting critic at the Vermont Studio Center for 13 years and also teaches painting and is a weekly critic at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA).  Beginning in 1994 he spent 13 summers working on the northwest coast of Ireland, an extended painting campaign described in the PBS film documentary, Ballycastle.

    He can always be found with a camera in one pocket and a pencil in the other and his photographs are presented in the recent publication, because I have no interest in those questions, with an essay by David Cohen.

    Registration and Payments:

    • Registration is made by making a 50% deposit through our on-line secure payment system. You may use any major credit card when checking out.
    • The balance is due by 6 weeks out from the workshop start date.
    • Registration is open until the workshop is filled, at which point we open a waitlist. Often students on the wait list are able to take the workshop due to unanticipated circumstances of another enrollee.
    • All workshops have caps for attendants. In order to reserve your spot, it is advisable to enroll as soon as possible.
    • We cannot run under-enrolled workshops. Therefore, if you are planning to book a flight, we recommend waiting until we make the final call on a workshop at 6 weeks out from the travel in date. However, as soon as the workshop meets minimum we will inform all participants.

    Refund Policies:

    • A full refund is made when a workshop that is canceled or already full at the time of registration.
    • An email or letter cancellation is required for withdrawals. Students who withdraw 6 weeks prior to the workshop start date receive a refund of the workshop deposit less a 25% cancellation & processing fee.   
    • If a cancellation is made later than 6 weeks prior to the workshop, the deposit is forfeited, but a credit for the amount may be applied to another workshop that same calendar year. You may also transfer your deposit to a friend or family member for that same calendar year or make a tax-deductible donation to Cullowhee Mountain ARTS. 
    • Students who withdraw within 4 weeks of the workshops will forfeit their payments, even if workshop was paid in full, but can transfer the payments made to another workshop during the calendar year, or transfer their deposit to a friend or family member for that same calendar year, or make a tax-deductible donation to Cullowhee Mountain ARTS.
    • We strongly recommend purchasing trip cancellation insurance from your travel agent in the event of an unforeseen medical issue.
