Leave the details of life behind and give yourself a creative retreat. Supported by the splendor of unspoiled nature, you will be given the time and serenity to refill your creative well.

“I am delighted to consider the possibilities for this retreat + workshops. Students will be exploding with new ideas and creative concepts! During these 5 days, you will learn from your workshop instructor, but will have opportunities to expand your ideas as you get exposed to new concepts and mediums, gleaned from the interaction and conversations that take place with all participants along with after dinner presentations and conversations.  What could be better than to step out of the chaos of our overly stressed lives and be nurtured in this peaceful environment, stimulated with new teachings and given unlimited time to create, reflect and rest.”                   Norma Hendrix, Executive Director, Cullowhee Arts~                                           _____________________________________________________________________________

Color with Landscape • On Site and in the Studio

In this workshop, you will experience the triad of plein air landscape painting by; observing landscape, engaging in the painting process, keying into the visual interests that stimulate your imagination.
Working outdoors in the unspoiled acreage of Lake Logan, we will take advantage of its beautiful and diverse natural subjects (water, mountains, streams, a lily pond). In the studio, we will work with information and ideas gleaned outside. Here, we will also develop specific color-structure studies and apply this vocabulary to the landscape.
Each day’s painting journey will deal with a specific color premise, for example: The over-all color-light of a painting, or weighing saturated color to muted color, or observing how color changes as it passes into a specific light, as well as instruction with transitions from one color-family to another. As words, these concepts may sound bland, but in the language of painting, they evoke strong feeling and light – the essence of what make a painting come to life.

Materials: Sketch pad and watercolors + oils or acrylics, portable easel and painting tools of your choice (specific color list will be given)

Her paintings are in collections across the US, and in the UK, Canada and Hong Kong. Bourne teaches drawing, color and design and the University of Maine in Orono, and at Colby College. She teaches painting and drawing in private workshops.  She holds an MFA from University of Michigan School of Art and Design, and a BFA from Portland School of Art (now Maine College of Art).

"Louise Bournes paintings offer a visceral response to the physical world.  They are deeply emotive, felt responses to the artists immediate surroundings. Light, atmosphere, elements of the landscape, corners of sunny porches, the interior of the studio wherever she turns her keen eye and probing brush, we are rewarded with paintings that reflect her deep intelligence and curiosity about the world. Like the paintings of Fairfield Porter, Bournes paintings make us care about the most humble and yet most universal of subjects, our everyday lives.”                                                              Suzette McAvoy, Executive Director + Chief Curator, Center for Maine Contemporary Art
