FINDING COLOR, TEXTURE, LIGHT & COMPOSITION IN THE LANDSCAPE

This workshop will give students the opportunity to work outside in the lovely Snow Hill location with marshes, the Pocomoke River and the historic downtown.conventional and unconventional formats while focusing on strengthening drafting and perceptual skills. You will be guided to enhance your sensory awareness of the landscape, particularly with respect to color and texture. You will “find” and mix highly nuanced color palettes directly from the landscape and from natural objects. The class will also explore techniques in creating a variety of textural grounds/surfaces on canvases and panels. Each of us will complete a number of small oil paintings as well as a group of improvisatory drawings.
Mike Dowley is a native to the D.C. region and has taught painting, drawing and design at Georgetown University and at Northern Virginia Community College since 2010.He is currently an Associate Professor of Painting and Drawing at Northern Virginia Community College in Annandale, Virginia. He has shown his work locally and nationally at Arlington Arts Center, District of Columbia Arts Center, Porch Projects, Morton Fine Art, Visarts Rockville and nationally at Creative Arts Workshop, New Haven, CT, Atlantic Gallery, New York City. His work has been selected for exhibition by William Bailey, Yale University, Joan Young, Guggenheim Museum, and Matthew Higgs, White Columns. - A full refund is made when a student registers for a workshop that is canceled or already full at the time of registration.
- An email or letter cancellation is required for withdrawals. Students who withdraw 6 weeks prior to the workshop receive a refund of the workshop deposit less a 25% cancellation & processing fee.
- If a cancellation is made later than 6 weeks prior to the workshop, the deposit is forfeited, but a credit for the amount may be applied to another workshop that same calendar year. You may also transfer your deposit to a friend or family member for that same calendar year or make a tax deductible donation to Cullowhee Mountain ARTS.
- Students who withdraw within 4 weeks of the workshops, even if workshop was paid in full, receive no refund but can transfer to another workshop during the calendar year or transfer their deposit to a friend or family member for that same calendar year or make a tax deductible donation to Cullowhee Mountain ARTS.
We strongly recommend purchasing trip cancellation insurance from your travel agent in the event an unforeseen medical emergency.
