James Edward Scherbarth - Process, Purpose, Passion: an introduction to abstract painting with Oil and Cold Wax Medium
This 5-day workshop, taught by Jim Scherbarth, will introduce artists to abstract painting using the process of layering and mark-making, developed by Rebecca Crowell. Using cold wax medium, tube oils, pigment sticks, powdered pigments and a variety of implements – students will explore ways to create rich textures, resonant color fields and personal mark making. Utilizing various tools and techniques we will “push the limits” of our mediums and welcome the surprises along the way. Jim will also address concepts of form and content, deliberate and accidental mark making, starting points, titling of work, working in series all within the discussion of process/purpose/passion. During these full five days expect demonstrations covering technique, group discussions and presentations. Scherbarth will help students to examine the "why" of abstract painting while students explore their persona creativity and identify their purpose and passion.
Printed resources will be provided to raise awareness & appreciation for the content of good abstract art. Endorsed by Rebecca Crowell, this workshop will provide students a foundational understanding in these unique techniques that she has developed in the use of Cold Wax medium. Jim is former student who is now a long-time friend and associate of Rebecca Crowell’s.
