Elaine Sexton - Art in TextJune 18—23, 2017Medium: Poetry and Book ArtLevel: Open to All
Tuition: $600 | Lab Fee: $45
This workshop is part book arts and part writing workshop. In 5 days we will make 5 artist books. Students will learn to make a range of containers from simple fascicles, a la Emily Dickinson’s sleeves, to works in 3-D, to books made from a single sheet of paper. You will be guided through drafting & revising short works in prose & poetry, then fitting your words into structures. These can be as simple or as elaborate as the materials you choose to use, but mainly folding, tearing, and altering paper. You will complete the workshop with several templates and new points of entry to write and use text as image. In-class exercises will stretch conventional ideas of how we experience text on the page. No previous bookmaking or writing experience is necessary.
Poet, critic, art writer and maker, Elaine Sexton’s third collection of poetry Prospect/Refuge is just out with Sheep Meadow Press. Her poems, essays, reviews, and images have appeared in numerous journals and sites including American Poetry Review, Art in America, Poetry, Poetry Daily, Plume, and O! the Oprah Magazine. Widely anthologized, her work is included in the 2015 edition of World English Poetry, edited by Sudeep Sen. She has taught in several colleges and universities including the graduate writing program at City College (CUNY), the Sarah Lawrence College Writing Institute, and New York University. She serves as the visual arts editor for Tupelo Quarterly, and is a member of the National Book Critics Circle.
