Dean Nimmer - PAINTING IN THE MODE - Impressionism, Cubism and Abstract ExpressionismJune 11—16, 2017
Level: All Levels
Tuition: $675 | Lab Fee: $50
This class will explore painting and drawing focused on three art movements – Impressionism (the extraordinary effects of light and shadow) – Cubism (a fragmented reality) and Abstract Expressionism (no holds barred free form abstraction). We will study master works of each movement and develop compositions and studies based on the techniques and philosophy of each movement. Rather than trying to simply copy the outward appearance of a particular genre, we will endeavor to use our eyes and imagination to interpret nature filtered through these uniquely dynamic perspectives.
Dean will emphasize sketching and loose interpretations of each movement rather than producing finished artworks this week. To that end, students will use acrylics, watercolors and dry drawing media rather than oil paints for this class.
This class is most appropriate for artists with at least a moderate background in painting and drawing and a familiarity with the art forms we will study.
Emeritus Professor, Dean Nimmer, is the former Chair of the Painting, Printmaking programs at Mass College of Art, where he taught from 1970 to 2004.
