Retreat-Workshop Schedule

“I am truly moved  to consider the possibilities for this May Gathering of Writers and Artists. During these 5 days, we will have ample time to refresh, decompress, connect with others on their unique creative walk. You will be giving to yourself time to focus on your creative work and supported in the by other artstis and writers. In the spirit of "Retreat", we honor all who come to take what is needed and be encourage all to be gentle with themselves when the need may be to "retreat" from the group. When we step out of the chaos of our overly stressed lives and are nurtured in a supremely peaceful environment - Lake Logan and its 300+ acres of unspoiled nature, we give ourselves a spaciousness that can bring to us; a return to our core or center, the possibility of new teachings, fresh exchange with others on the creative path and unlimited time to create, reflect and rest. A Gathering - Come~
Norma Hendrix, Executive Director, Cullowhee Arts

Writer in Residence - Newton Smith

Each day we will begin with a focusing meditation followed by a very brief writing exercise inspired by Chinese poets or other contemporary writers as a warm-up. On the first day, I will give a brief talk with examples on expanding the boundaries of each writer’s poetry. The writers can begin a new poem or work on the limits of an existing poem. In the evening, we will workshop the day’s writing. On the second day, I will again begin with a brief warm-up, this time a response to the art being produced at the retreat, followed by a talk on allowing other voices and settings into our poems. This will again be followed by a workshop. On the third day, after the warm-up on poetry in the natural world, I will give a talk on exploring the unknown life inside our poems, followed in the evening by a workshop. On the final day, the writers will be able to give a brief reading from their writing during the week. Each day I will be available for individual consultation.

Newton Smith
has lived on a farm high in the mountains of western North Carolina since 1968. He spends his time now hiking weekly, gardening every year, traveling all over the world, camping across the U.S. and writing poetry and children’s fiction. He taught Creative Writing, Technical Writing, and Modern Poetry and Fiction at Western Carolina University. Before he retired, he was responsible for redesigning the university webpage and became the Associate Chief Information Officer. His work has appeared in numerous publications including: Southern Poetry Review, Carolina Quarterly, Trace, Apple, Ann Arbor Review, The Miscellany, Pebble, Laurel Review, Quartet, Asheville Poetry Review, Rivendell, Jonah, Main Street Rag, Pisgah Review, International Poetry Anthology and others. He recently walked the 500-mile Camino de Santiago and in 2016 published Camino Poems, a selection of poems composed on that pilgrimage. He just finished a children’s book and has a manuscript of recent poems under consideration.

Artist in Residence - Norma Hendrix

After our morning meditations with Newt, Norma will gather those interested in the idea of 5-minute drawings. We will gather at a location and then enter into the stillness of the site so that we can; observe, listen and then consider what to distill. These drawings will not only become a journal of your time and response to the place that we select, but will stir up your powers of observation – a place to extract the essence, which is true abstraction. Hendrix will also be available upon request to meet privately for consultation, critique - to give a reading of what is happening in your work and to offer thoughts, articles or other reference of other artists or ideas you might consider at your specific juncture. Before the retreat is over, Norma will present a slide show of a variety of art works that capture “essence” in an unlabored but very present approach. You may be surprised at what can happen.
