  • 2018 Summer Arts - Elaine Sexton - The Art in the Line

    The Art in the Line
    June 24 — 29, 2018
    Medium:   Poetry to Book Art
    Level:  Open to All
    Tuition: $600
    Lab Fee: $35

    On Campus Lodging/meals: $650

The focus of this workshop is how to make art with words, finding the art in the line.  Participants will learn to make a range of containers  from drafting simple poems to manipulating text on the page using lists, erasures, and other forms of ellipsis. You will be guided through drafting & revising short works in prose & poetry, then fitting your words into structures. These can be as simple or as elaborate as the materials we choose to use, but mainly we will be folding, taping, tearing, and altering paper.  Poems are structures that are in many ways like sculpture or collage, with that in mind we will make simple fascicles, a la Emily Dickinson’s sleeves, works in 3-D, and books made from a single sheet of paper.  There has always been cross-pollination between the visual and literary arts. We will consider how voice, tone, and imagery transform a subject looking at work from poets and artists as varied as Robin Coste Lewis and Mary Ruefle, Tom Phillips and Jenny Holzer, Lawrence Weiner and Louise Bourgeois as models. You will complete the workshop with several templates and new points of entry to write and use text as image. In-class exercises will stretch from conventional to still evolving ideas of how we can experience text on the page.  This workshop is for artists and/or poets, beginners to advanced.  Participants will complete our week with at least as many new strategies to apply to their next poem as days spent together.
