    Step Into Cold Wax Medium with Oil Painting:
    An introduction to the possibilities of layering, texture, and mark making with this versatile medium

    July 1 - 3, 2019

    This three day workshop is for those who would like step into a basic understanding of the medium of cold wax/oil painting. With helpful demonstrations and exercises, students will learn techniques for applying this versatile medium to create rich luminous textures and patterns, explore intuitive connections in abstract painting, gain strategies for strengthening their compositions. Students will create multiple small works (under 8”x8”) on both paper and wood panels. Most Supplies will be be provided. 

    Melba Cooper has been an art educator and professional artist for over 35 years. Utilizing a research journal/sketchbook, she incorporates an arts integrated approach to her works inspired by environmental issues. She believes that art is a powerful tool to bring people into meaningful conversation. She has a MAT from the University of South Carolina specializing in gifted art education. Both a painter and a printmaker, she combines techniques from each to create her recent cold/wax series of works entitled “Pollination”. The series content is focused on the energy of the honeybee hive in which she imagines and longs for the hum of a sacred regard for the Earth. This exhibit has been featured in the gallery at Island Lavender, Washington Island WI.  She has been the visiting artist at Island Lavender for the summers of 2016 and 2017. Other venues for this series have been The Circular Church in Charleston (spirituality and art exhibit), Charles Street Gallery in Beaufort SC., Haywood Arts Council Gallery, and Jackson County Library. Her work is in the homes of collectors in SC, NC, NY, OH, GA. WI.


    Student Supply List:

    • 1 pad of Arches Oil Paper, 12" x 16"
    • Decorative Stencils from "Michaels" - 2 - 5 different patterns
    • Drawing materials: pencils, charcoal, pen/ink
    • Blue Painter's tape
    • Box of nitrile gloves

    We will have some basic oil paint colors for the class. If you have a supply of oil paint, bring them and if you would like to spice up your paint box, below are some of Melba's favorite Gamblin colors:

    • Asphaltum
    • Warm White
    • Titanium White
    • Indian Yellow
    • Manganise Blue
    • Ultramarine Blue
    • Cad Red medium
    • Dioxinine Purple

    Refund Policies:
    Summer Workshops
    • A full refund is made when a student registers for a workshop that is canceled or already full at the time of registration.
    • An email or letter cancellation is required for withdrawals. Students who withdraw before April 30 receive a refund of the workshop deposit less a 25% registration & processing fee. Any housing and meal deposits will be refunded in full.
    • If a cancellation is made after April 30, the deposit is forfeited, but a credit for the amount may be applied to another workshop that same calendar year. You may also transfer your deposit to a friend or family member for that same calendar year or make a  tax deductible donation  to Cullowhee Mountain ARTS. (There are some workshops that may have earlier cut off dates due to demand - this will be noted in your confirmation email.
    • Students who withdraw after May 1 even if workshop was paid in full, receive  no refund  but can transfer to another workshop during the calendar year or transfer their deposit to a friend or family member for that same calendar year or make a  tax deductible donation  to Cullowhee Mountain ARTS. 
    • If you are flying, we strongly recommend purchasing trip cancellation insurance from your travel agent in the event an unforeseen medical emergency.
