What is an Art Immersion Trip?

In April of 2013 people from all points in the US and Central America met in Santa Fe, NM, not quite knowing the answer to that question. Towards the end of the eight days of private gallery receptions, museum visits, meals with other artists and highly energetic workshops in a high profile artist’s private studio, participants said to me, “I now get it – this truly is an art immersion, indeed it has been a life changing experience for me.”

The artists providing workshops during the 2014
 “Art Immersion Trip” are:

Master Printmaker, Ron Pokrasso, Mixed Media Artist, Kate Rivers, and Mixed Media and Encaustic Artist, Paula Roland, in Santa Fe. In Tao: Lisa Pressman  is teaming with Cullowhee Mountain ARTS director and artist, Norma Hendrix. Each of these artists  are proven teachers and artists with national or international reputations.

Artist-students meet in Santa Fe and/or Taos

In Santa Fe, students take their workshops in the artists’private studios. They stay at the  Old Santa Fe Inn - a boutique inn only four blocks from the Historic Plaza

The breakfasts are inspiring – a full breakfast-burrito bar with fresh fruit, juices and coffee or tea).and receive superb lodging, meals, guided gallery tours, private gallery receptions - all a compliment to the highest level of instruction in their individual workshops.

In Taos, the  "Retreat plus Workshop" is slightly different.

The lodging and workshop time are held at the amazing Mabel Dodge Luhan house. The workshop is team taught by artists Lisa Pressman and Norma Hendrix. The Mabel Dodge Luhan House in itself is inspiring enough for a visit, but add to that a time of meeting other artists, and working on aspects of our art that extend beyond the workshop. Topics such as evaluating ones’ work, revision, resurfacing, and creative play – drawing and mark making that respond to your sense of place plus "creative conversations" are part of this time too. Plan to go back refueled for a productive and mindful studio time upon your return.

Santa Fe and Taos are surrounded by gorgeous, unspoiled landscapes of ever shifting light and elements. These inspiring places are also major art centers. It is incredible for us at CMA to have a relationship with so many gifted and important artists in places like New Mexico where we can host life-changing experiences for artists.

So do I! And I particularly love visiting Northern New Mexico. The landscape alone is worth the visit, but the art, history and people make it a go to artist destination.

Last year when I went to Santa Fe leading the Cullowhee Mountain ARTS first annual Art Immersion Trip, I had a life- changing experience. Our group was meandering in and out of the galleries on Canyon Road, soon to stop and have lunch on the terrace of one of the Santa Fe's great restaurants. I stopped in one last gallery - Mathews Gallery - with my companions Janice and Diane.

I entered this lovely gallery and immediately locked onto a piece of art constructed of brightly colored collaged papers wonderfully designed and executed. When I looked at the name of the artist, I read, "Kate Rivers." When I was in art school in Columbus Ohio in the mid 1970's one of my dear friends was Kathy Rivers - we had lost track of one another through the years and none of my searches to locate Kathy had been fruitful. We wandered further through the gallery into a room whose walls were covered with large mixed media collage pieces on paper - all very engaging powerful images. I again was drawn to this work. I saw a bio with a postage size picture of Kate Rivers. "Humm, that could actually be my friend."

After inquiring at the desk we went to lunch and Diane used her phone to look Kate Rivers up on FB. By that afternoon, my old friend Kathy Rivers and I were talking on the phone - and met the next day for lunch in Santa Fe. Kate had moved a few years back to Santa FE and is now a resident artist.

This year Kate is one of the instructors teaching in her personal studio in Santa Fe during our Art Immersion Trip. Here is a link to Kate's workshop information and bio. KATE RIVERS.

In addition to Kate, master printmaker, RON POKRASSO and  encaustic, multi-media artist PAULA ROLAND are opening their studios for an incredible week of learning and art-making. JOIN US - April 19 - 25

Check out the option in Taos, April 26 - 30. Stay at the historic The Mabel Dodge Luhan House and enjoy time of Retreat with Workshop. LISA PRESSMAN and NORMA HENDRIX will lead the group in multi media creativity exploration, peppered with coffee (or wine) conversations about the creative process, blocks and studio habits. The goal is to unwind and unlock before leaving the magic of Northern New Mexico and strategizing to keep the creativity fresh going forward.
