Come to the Lake where 300 acres of wilderness becomes your studio.
Take one workshop with either of our stellar instructors, but enjoy collaborative sessions where
you will receive the benefit of instruction and experimentation with two disciplines.

What could be better than to step out of the chaos of our overly stressed lives and be nurtured in the peace of nature,
stimulated with new teachings and have unlimited to create, reflect and rest.”

"Finding Your Form Through Drawing & Clay"

    Skill Level:

    All levels

Regardless of your medium, in this process oriented workshop, we will move back and forth between clay and various drawing media, seeking inspiration from the beautiful surroundings of Lake Logan with its host of natural forms within its environment. Working inside and outside the studio, our ideas and materials will be our partners and the creative process will take us on a journey of discovery. Artist who are used to working in two dimensions and those who usually work in three will all benefit from the contrast and combination of these two ways of working.  We’ll use earthenware clay and a variety of simple hand building techniques along with doing lots of drawing.

Studio Artist and Teaching Artist Alice Ballard has conducted workshops at University of South Carolina, Francis Marion University, SC, Arrowmont School of Art, the Bascom Art Center, Penland School of Craft, SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities and Cullowhee Mountain Arts.  Ballard has an extensive exhibition record. Open Studio - Mini Residency - without workshop

For artists who would like to come for the retreat at Lake Logan and enjoy studio space and time to create without a workshop. Come to work on an art project you have been intending to get to without the interruptions of daily life. Inspiration and focus come easily without having to grocery shop, cook meals, or answer phones, especially in the natural peace and serenity of Lake Logan. Think of it as a mini-residency. The cost is greatly reduced since it will not include  a workshop.

Here’s what you’ll get: 6 days, 5 nights in a private room, in a cabin or cottage on the Lakeside of the Lake Logan Conference Center, a workspace set up for you to come right in and get started on your art; plus, optional participation in all Retreat events (see schedule below) for a fraction of the conference cost. In addition, three healthy, chef prepared meals, the opening wine reception, morning mindfulness and yoga sessions. You’ll also be able to take part in collaborative sessions with Ceramics Artist- Instructor, Alice Ballard, where you’ll be taught to make a (pinch pot method) “meditation bowl;” and a cold wax and oil experimentation led by CMA Executive Director and Artist, Norma Hendrix. Personal feedback and critique available as wanted or needed. Enjoy nature walks, canoeing or kayaking on the lake, a massage by appointment, or just spend some time de-stressing from the overly demanding day to day world we live in. All of this is inclusive in one price of $975. It would be hard to stay in a roadside motel for 5 nights and buy 3 meals a day for that price!
