“I am delighted to consider the possibilities for this retreat + workshops. Students will be exploding with new ideas and creative concepts! During these 5 days, you will learn from your workshop instructor, but will have opportunities to expand your ideas as you get exposed to new concepts and mediums, gleaned from the interaction and conversations that take place with all participants along with after dinner presentations and conversations.  What could be better than to step out of the chaos of our overly stressed lives and be nurtured in this peaceful environment, stimulated with new teachings and given unlimited time to create, reflect and rest.”   Norma Hendrix, Executive Director, Cullowhee Arts~                                           _____________________________________________________________________________

    Workshop with Barbara Tyroler
    "Reflections: Enhancing your Creative Vision:
      A Photographic Journey"
Join us on this 3-day photographic journey to explore techniques and strategies that sharpen your vision and enrich your photographic skills. Capture the beauty of the natural landscape of the Lake Logan mountain retreat center and engage in deep personal renewal with a fresh sense of inspiration and confidence, experimenting with new techniques to build strong and evocative imagery.

Throughout this unique 3-day immersion, students discuss opportunities for commercial commissions, fine art exhibition, and magazine or online publication. Students may practice their editorial, portrait, and commercial skills photographing the CMA artist instructors and their workshops. For those interested in landscape or magazine photography, students may use the scenic backdrop of the Lake Logan Mountain retreat center to produce illustrative imagery. For the fine art gallery photographer, students may seek a purely unique and personal approach, using artistic and creative camera and editing techniques.

Included during the retreat are morning mindfulness sessions, nature walks, yoga sessions, massage by appointment, a nighttime fire circle, and personal space for reflection and communing with nature. Lake Logan has everything necessary to support a rich and nourishing week that combines time for your creative work, solitude, and connectivity with nature and other artists and writers.

Daily exercises provide the opportunity to practice hands-on techniques including the use of artificial and ambient light, extended camera controls (stretching exposure time with slow shutter speeds, zooming in for selective focus through shallow perception, or broadening our visions through extended depth of field). We rise early to explore what happens when the sun is low, or if the sun escapes us, we will consider grey and luminous colors that emerge through the fog. We will capture late evening and the light of night. Facilitated small group critique sessions serve to sharpen editing skills and inspire stimulating conversations with colleagues, while individualized sessions allow for personal feedback and portfolio development, exploring formalistic elements that contribute to emotion and meaning.

Students may use any camera, experimental lens system, or smart phone. Personal laptops or tablets may be used for image editing and critique. Please arrive for class with a digital camera or image-capture device and all accessories (cards, batteries, tripod, etc.), a selection of 20 of your favorite images to share with the group (prints are welcome), a notebook for journaling, and an external hard drive to bring your files to the workshop and take new work home.

Barbara Tyroler is an educator, photographer, and community worker. Barbara earned an Med from the University of Massachusetts Amherst with emphasis on visual communication and community arts development and an MFA in Imaging and Digital Arts from the University of Maryland where she studied photography and videography, then joined the faculty of the art department and taught traditional wet darkroom, digital imaging, and lens based critical theory. Drawing on her dual graduate degrees in digital art and education, Tyroler developed the University of Maryland’s first digital photography curriculum.

Since returning to North Carolina she has offered independent critique and seminars for photographers, advanced photography workshops at the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University, and immersive photographic courses at Western Carolina University’s Cullowhee Mountain Arts program. She serves on the Board of FRANK Gallery as arts education coordinator. Her commercial and advocacy work emphasize site-specific portraiture, abstract nature, and fine art imagery for corporations, universities, and health-oriented non-profits.

The recipient of over 35 individual and community arts grants to promote multicultural and inclusive art experiences, she received the prestigious Into the Streets Community Arts commission, a project that won her a statewide Arts and Humanities award for her work with Autism and water portraiture. Her photography is shared, published, and exhibited in galleries, universities, private collections, and non-traditional public art spaces such as hospitals, schools, health care offices, meditation centers, and swimming pools. She is currently photographing North Carolina creative writers and the spaces they inhabit. In these portraits Tyroler is extending the intergenerational work of the pool portraiture, and enhancing the symbolic and physical spaces of these writers and their ancestors.
