    Retreat-Workshop Schedule

“I am absolutely thrilled to consider the possibilities for this retreat + workshops. Students will be exploding with new ideas and creative concepts! During these 5 days, you will learn from your workshop instructor, but will have opportunities to expand your ideas as you get exposed to new concepts and mediums, gleaned from the interaction and conversations that take place with all participants along with after dinner presentations and conversations.  What could be better than to step out of the chaos of our overly stressed lives and be nurtured in this peaceful environment, stimulated with new teachings and given unlimited time to create, reflect and rest.”

    Workshop with Lauren Mantecon

The Alchemy of Painting - Exploring Expressive Painting and Mixed Media Techniques from the Ground Up

In this workshop, we will explore our deepest knowing by stilling the body through short meditations and guided visualization - gently nudging us to the places that hold a deep reservoir of imagery. We will begin from the ground up making handmade gesso then using dry pigments in combination with paint. Lauren will guide you through a series of idea-generating techniques and gestural exercises that lead to understanding the balance found between technique and intuition. Spontaneous mark-making, collage and painting techniques will all be employed to broaden our visual vocabulary and art making dexterity. Our materials will be quality paper, boards, handmade gesso, dry pigment, collage materials, glues, oil sticks, cold wax and oil paint.

Lauren Mantecon holds a BA degree from California State University, Fullerton, CA, and a MFA from Portland State University, Lauren currently resides in New Mexico and teaches workshops on the creative process in art centers around the country as well in her Santa Fe studio. She is a current recipient of The Lillian Orlowsky and William Freed Grant and has been awarded numerous art residencies that include, Djerassi, Woodside CA, Santa Fe Art institute and The Helene Wurlitzer Foundation in Taos, NM.

Lauren has exhibited her work extensively across the Mid-West and Western United States, as well as in New York and Mexico. Lauren is currently represented by Friesen Gallery in Kethum, ID, Muse Gallery in Columbus, Ohio and Hilton Head, South Carolina and Gebert Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona.

    Workshop with Leisa Rich

    Paper, Rock, Scissors: Dimensional Paintings
    on Paper and Fabric

This dynamic paper, paint and textiles-based workshop will feature painting, printing, marbling, heat transfer, collage and stitch techniques on various substrates to build texture and create strong visual impact.

The session kicks off with methods of painting and printing on a variety of papers and fabrics to lay down a base of color and pattern from which to build. Use acrylic, fabric paints, and dyes, and apply with brushes, sponges, and rollers; take advantage of the stunning natural surroundings to print with solar (sun) dyes using resist processes; experiment with marbling -- a process of creating beautiful aqueous surface designs in stone, swirled and combed patterns – and add in details with oil pastels and drawing tools. Inspiration for mark making will be all around us!

In addition, images emailed to Leisa prior to the workshop will be pre-printed by her onto heat transfer paper and you will use them to build additional visuals on your works using heat to affix. Lastly, you will learn the basics of free motion machine embroidery and hand embroidery. Adding this element by building dimension and texture and highlighting areas of visual interest - using materials such as hemp, embroidery floss, threads, yarn, or other interesting cording.

Intensive interaction with Leisa means that your own personal creative style will be encouraged, and she will assist you in tailoring
the techniques learned to your artistic vision. The emphasis is on stretching yourself and leaving with many new skills and ideas for further studio exploration. This is an advanced workshop, so some knowledge of basic painting and color theory will be expected.

This workshop suits the crafter to the professional, painters and fiber artists. Applications of the techniques can be in the art field, wearable art, quilting and surface design/fibers.

Leisa Rich is an experimental artist working in 2D, sculptural, installation and viewer interactive format. Using the detritus of society, unique methods on common materials, fiber art-based techniques including Free Motion Stitching -- a method of “painting” with thread using a sewing machine -- and 3D printing, she engages the viewer tactilely and visually. Textile Nature, The Art of Nature, 3D Mixed Media Textile Art, Textile Art Around the World,Mastering the Art of Embroidery, The Best of America Sculpture and Noplaceness: Art in a Post-Urban Landscape, and featured in numerous magazines, zines, on-line, and in televised interviews that include PBS.
