Newsletter, April 5, 2012

There is such a diversity of extraordinary artist–instructors coming to the Cullowhee Mountain ARTS 2012 Summer Visual ARTS Series, that it might be easy to miss their specific contributions. One of the goals of the newsletter is to take a moment to shed light on individual artists. Two of the artists – both painters - coming to teach this season, Stuart Shils and Susan Lichtman have been featured in a wonderful blog hosted by artist Catherine Kehoe titled “Painting: Powers of Perception.” I share here a few excerpts and encourage readers to enjoy the articles in full – (link provided).

Stuart Shils on Color and his Palette

“Of most importance for me, regardless of what is on the palette, is that the color mood of the painting is not the result of what specific colors are put out, but of what the painter can do with those colors to create a color complexion in the painting. I use the same colors for night painting, day painting, painting in Italy, painting on the coast of Ireland, urban painting or rural painting — the idea being that the colors are like the tools in a stone mason's bag and it is the mason's job to use the tools to get the job done. Just because a landscape is green doesn't mean we don't have reds on the palette. Everything gets mixed with everything, the color is never even close to being right out of the tube, and the palette has to look like a battlefield, which it is. The warms and the cools, mixing it up in the middle, out of which comes color. But until the color is put down on the canvas there is still really no color. Color is something that cannot exist on the palette but only in juxtaposition in the painting itself”…. Click here to read Stuart Shil's full blog article.

Stuart Shils is teaching the workshop “The Structure of the Visual Moment” June 24 – 29.

Sunday, June 24, 7 – 8:30 pm, Shils will present a lecture titled The Perceptual Moment: The Nature of Perception and The Perception of Nature, open to the general public.

Susan Lichtman
Making something happen with a restriction of possibilities

“A limited palette allows me to hold together a picture with a lot of disparate elements. My favorite card game is gin – and I think of a limited palette as being like a hand that one is dealt. The challenge is to make something happen with a restriction of possibilities.

I use three primary colors and white for each painting. The Red might be venetian or cadmium, the Blue might be a cobalt or ultramarine or black or even a green; and the Yellow might be yellow ochre or a cadmium. Lately I have been using titanium/zinc white. I might add a fourth hue, i.e. use both black and blue, or both yellow ochre and cadmium yellow light….” Click here to read entire article. Click here to view a slideshow of Susan's stunning work.

Susan Lichtman’s workshop “Person, Place, Thing: Figure Painting Invention” is July 8 – 13. Monday, July 9, 7pm, Lichtman give a slide talk “My Life and Work in Painting

YOUTH ART

Western Carolina University will celebrate the artwork of local students with the 2012 Jackson County Youth Art Month exhibit from Monday, April 9, through Friday, April 27, in WCU’s John W. Bardo Fine and Performing Arts Center.

There will be a reception 2-3 p.m. Sunday, April 15, in the north hallway of the Bardo Arts Center, when awards will be announced. The jurors are WCU art edcucation students and Fine Art Museum staff. The event is free and the public is invited.

“The focus of Youth Art Month is to convey the message that art education develops self-esteem, visual literacy and an ability to produce meaningful material form,” Tapley said. “Jackson County is fortunate to have an art teacher in each of its public schools who educates students in the history and aesthetics of art-making and gives them opportunities to critically analyze the meaning of art in their daily lives.”

ART IN THE REGION

{Re}HAPPENING 2012 - This Saturday, April 7!!

The Media Arts Project (MAP) and the Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center (BMCM+AC) announce the third annual {Re}HAPPENING, on Saturday, April 7 from 6pm to Midnight in the original dining hall of the former Black Mountain College, now Camp Rockmont. In partnership with the MAP, this BMCM+AC event pays tribute to Black Mountain College by bringing its dynamic energy into the present day. The project has developed as an innovative fundraising and community building collaboration between the two non-profits, balancing the history, innovation and experience of BMCM+AC, with the forward-thinking and media-based collective of artists that defines the MAP.

Among the more than fifty artists participating in this year’s event will be two projects supported by the MAP Community Grant, which was completely funded by the proceeds from the events in 2010 and 2011. Find out more ….
