Cullowhee Mountain Arts has partnered with Takapuna Art Supplies to host two workshops taught by artist William Maughan, in beautiful Takapuna, New Zealand.  Author of the best selling book, "The Artist's Complete Guide to Drawing the Head," he is also well know for his illustration and fine art pastel paintings. This is your opportunity to learn from a master. T hese workshops are for artists seeking a solid understanding of the anatomy of the head and concepts of chiaroscuro during the week of January 8. Follow up that workshop with a week of on site pastel painting of the gorgeous region of Takapuna on the North Island of New Zealand while receiving instruction on composition, drawing and color.

WILLIAM MAUGHAN is the Graduate Director, of the School of Illustration at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. A professional illustrator and fine artist, Mr. Maughan has provided numerous illustrations for such companies as DreamWorks, CBS television, Universal Studios, Chevrolet, Samuel Adams, and Milton Bradley Company, to name but a few. His work has been represented by major galleries and publishers domestically and internationally.

Mr. Maughan’s best-selling book, "The Artist’s Complete Guide to Drawing the Head," published in 2004, has been translated into many other languages. Still in print, the book continues to enjoy sales to artists seeking to unlock the mystery of creating a likeness in portrait drawing.

Takapuna is the unofficial ‘capital’ of Auckland’s North Shore. The town offers a huge range of cafés and restaurants as well as specialty shops and boutiques along Hurstmere Road, leading to Takapuna’s lovely white-sand beach. A short walk from the beach is the beautiful Lake Pupuke. This lake is a volcanic crater noted for its dark purple water and is a favorite spot for rowing, sailing and canoeing. Takapuna Art Supply is within walking distance of all these features.

Owned by artists Sandy and Jim Auckland, the Takapuna Art Supply Store is a rich resource for artists. Their well-selected, high quality art supplies cover the spectrum of artists’ needs. They are also New Zealand’s  sole distributers of Gamblin paints and supplies, and stock a full array of other high quality paints, pastels, brushes, drawing materials, papers - really, everything an artist may need. The convenience for students to take a workshop where art supplies are at hand is incredibly stimulating and conventient.

A compliment to the store is The Studio where Sandy & Jim host life drawing and painting. They are working with Cullowhee Mountain Arts to host a variety of workshops with internationally recognized artist-instructors teaching both traditoinal, academy-stye workshops, as well as abstract, experimental workshops. Along with their friendly staff, Sandy and Jim are supportive of workshop students and are happy to pre-order supplies making it easier for students to travel. The store is stocked with the finest art supplies and a huge array of high quality fine art brands.
The studio space provides ample room and good lighting. Coffee, tea and snacks are provided during workshop days.
